Welcome to Year 1
Class Teacher – Miss Thomis
Learning Support Assistant (LSA) – Mrs Cooper
PPA Teacher – Mrs Bavinton
In Year One lessons are interactive, exciting and engaging. To ensure an effective transition from early years to Year One, children will have plenty of opportunities to learn through play in the continuous provision. We have both an indoor and outdoor classroom to provide opportunities that will engage and challenge children with the Year One curriculum. Phonics is an important part of learning in Year One as it underpins the skills needed for both reading and writing.
Our topics this year are:
Autumn 1
Pirates |
Autumn 2
Poles Apart |
Spring 1
Woodlands |
Spring 2
Rainforests |
Summer 1
Farms |
Summer 2
Seasides |

Tests and assessments
Year 1 phonics screening check
The check will take place in June. Your child will read 40 words aloud to a teacher. Some of them are real words and some of them are pseudo words designed to test phonic skills. You’ll find out how your child did as part of their end of year report. Any children who do not score enough to pass the check in Year 1 will retake it in Year 2.
Whilst school will be closed I have attached a link to the currently phonics program we follow in school. This will help you to further understand how we teach phonics and gives you suggested phonics games to play at each phase.
Closure Document
Here is the Year 1 outline of work to be completed at home during the closure. This document was in the closure work packs given to Year 1 on Wednesday the 18th March. If your child was not in school on this date please contact school to arrange how to collect your child’s pack.
